Prospective Intern

Our 10-week research program provides motivated undergraduate students across the Nation the opportunity to with Virginia Tech faculty dedicated to mentoring high achieving students. MAOP provides prospective interns with a diverse selection of mentoring faculty and description of their research so the student can choose the area of research best suited for their specific interests. The primary goal of this program is to provide students with experiences that cultivate their career goals. We incorporate enriching opportunities such as weekly seminars focused on research and professional development, occasional social events, and a final symposium where participants present their research in poster form.

Qualifying students will have 30 credit hours completed from any 2 or 4-year institution and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Only first-time participants will be selected.

Selected students will receive a stipend of $3000, Virginia Tech meal plan and campus housing. Students will connect and get to know their entire SRI cohort at a weekend retreat at Smith Mountain Lake, individualized support through meetings with MAOP staff and an unforgettable overall experience yielding connections for a lifetime!

You will need a copy of your most recent transcripts, two letters of recommendation (one from a faculty member at your current institution and one from a professional setting: previous job, internship or teaching assistantship), complete application.

Applications open December 1st and close February 15. You will be utilizing the same system as the Graduate School Application process, just make sure to select MAOP to start your application. Once your complete application (including letters of recommendation) is received, it will be reviewed by faculty in your interested area of research. You will be notified if you have been selected by April 7 and will need to accept and confirm your invitation to the internship program by April 21 . The program begins May 27 and ends July 31 this year.

You will be expected to sign and submit forms indicating your insurance coverage, intern responsibilities and expectations and photo/media release.

YES. MAOP will be available to pick you up from the Roanoke Airport or Amtrak train stop, but you are financially responsible for your transportation to these locations.

Summer interns have stayed at the Graduate Life Center in the past. However, depending on the size of the cohort, other Virginia Tech residence halls may need to be used.

Clothing: There will be opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming and other sports so bring the proper clothing. The program ends with a formal Research Symposium, and we require business attire. 

Living: pillows, twin xl size sheets, all your personal care products, medications and health insurance card.

Transportation: If you are bringing your own vehicle, please make sure to let us know so we can work with you to get a parking pass.  You will be responsible for purchasing your own parking pass.
